Psychologist Robin Dunbar, who teaches at Oxford University (yes, that one), says storytelling “accounts for about 65% of [all] speaking time, with limited variation due to age or sex." Stories dominate our airtime. We read them (although a Smithsonian survey reports that only 73% of Americans read a book last year). And we watch their ever-loving shit. Why do we listen, read and watch stories? In addition to the reasons listed in the previous section (i.e. understanding, meaning, etc.), we listen to stories because that's how our brains evolve. We have become hardwired to experience the information that is transmitted to us as if we were there. Think about it. When someone tells you how sweet a cinnamon roll tastes, you can taste it. This means there are more areas of the brain that light image masking service up than just language and information receptors. Your sensory cortex fires up. You can smell and taste the dough. It doesn't stop there. You can see it in your mind. You can probably feel it too. But what happens next is what is remarkable. You probably remember the last time you had one - where you were, who was there, what time it was. Your brain uses a story to fill the three (or four) dimensions around you. Here's the real kicker: stories allow us to practice mind control. Kind of. There is a more scientific explanation available. Uri Hasson, who teaches at Princeton, describes the power of telling and listening to a story. He describes what he calls the "neural coupling" that occurs between a storyteller and a listener. Hasson says, “By simply telling a story, the woman [or man] could implant ideas, thoughts, and emotions into the brains of listeners.” In neural coupling, the listener receives the story and takes ownership of the idea, experience, or concept. Now that's power. Advertising Continue reading below Put a pin in that thought because we'll get to that shortly.
